What actually is marketing?
The whole thing, end to end. Social, PR, ads, email, they're all channels, ways of getting the message out, and marketing is the bit above them: who you're talking to, what you want people to say about you, how someone gets from first hearing about you to being in the room, and setting it all up so every season starts stronger than the last. The channels are the easy part once that's sorted :)
Pick the one closest to yours, then tap through the stages to see which channels lead at each one.
Warm up. Getting people interested before anything's on sale, so they're ready when it is.

Why it's a whole job
Most of the festivals, venues and labels I meet are already spending real money on marketing, a publicist here, a boosted post there, a designer for the poster, and nobody can tell them which of it sold a ticket. Everyone does their bit well, and the bit above all of it, who you're talking to, what you want them to say, where the money goes and whether it came back, ends up with whoever has a spare hour, which is how a great show ends up half full and every season starts from scratch.
That's the job I do
I join your team as your marketing lead and run it week to week, strategy, campaigns, systems, reporting, the lot, so you know where the money goes and what it bought, and next season starts with everything we learnt this one. The goal is you don't need me anymore :)
